Snowshoeing Under the Night Sky

Snowshoeing at night is a very different way to experience the Arctic, and still something not many people try around Tromsø. Away from the usual spots, you can enjoy the quiet and avoid the crowds, moving through the landscape with only the sound of snow under your feet.

At night, the Arctic feels like a different world: quieter, darker, and more intense. Snow reflects the light from the moon and stars, and on clear nights the sky opens up above you. And if we’re lucky, the Northern Lights might give us a show!

What can you expect from Star Walk with Wandering Owl?

  • Small group experience (4–8 people)
  • Quiet locations away from crowds and city lights
  • Time outdoors under the stars and Arctic night sky
  • Chance to see the Northern Lights (in the most unique way!) if conditions allow
  • Thermal suits and boots to keep you comfortable
  • Photos from the tour shared after the experience
  • Guidance from our  experienced nature guide
  • Comfortable return to Tromsø city centre after the hike

Witness: The stillness of the Arctic landscape

Step into the Arctic night and move quietly through snow-covered landscapes. The air is crisp and the only sounds are your footsteps and the occasional wind. Above you, stars shine brightly, and if you’re lucky, the Northern Lights may appear. Out here, away from city lights, the stillness of the wilderness is something you notice immediately.

Experience: The sky full of stars.

Step out into the Arctic night and look up: the sky stretches wide above you, filled with countless stars. Away from city lights, the darkness makes each star shine brighter and the constellations easier to spot. On clear nights, you may even catch the Northern Lights dancing across the sky. Being under this vast, open sky gives a true sense of the Arctic night.

Challenge yourself: Arctic Terrain.

The Arctic terrain is varied: snow, ice, and uneven paths make every step count. You’ll move at your own pace, using snowshoes, and feel the difference between forest trails and open landscapes. The cold and darkness add a unique element to the walk! By the end, you’ll have experienced the Arctic in a way few people do.

Important information

After booking with us you’ll receive a confirmation email. Please read through the email carefully and ensure all details are correct. If you don’t receive a confirmation email from us, please get in contact with our friendly team.

Our terms and conditions and our generous 24hr cancellation policy can be found here.

All participants need to complete the eWaiver before the tour/activity start time. Here is the link to our waiver. It’s one eWaiver per booking, no matter how many Wandering Owl activities you join. If you have been on tour with us in the last 12 months, you do not need to complete another waiver.

It’s a great idea to dress in layers, so as you warm up or cool down, you can add and remove layers. We suggest: woollen base layer, woollen sweater, down mid layer and a shell or windproof jacket as the final layer. Jeans, especially skinny jeans, aren’t windproof, nor do they have any thermal qualities. High heels and fashion shoes are unsuitable.

We suggest downloading WhatsApp before travelling to Norway. We prefer to use WhatsApp or email when communicating with our guests. Remember to keep your phone handy on the day of the tour in case we need to make last-minute changes or communicate with you.

We never cancel simply because the forecast says it might be cloudy. We will make the decision on the route or other changes based on safety considerations. If there is no snow, or not much snow, we’ll hike instead of snowshoe.

Wandering Owl is eco-certified by Travelife. This means we meet international sustainability standards and take real action to protect the Arctic environment. From small group sizes to reducing waste and supporting local communities, we believe every choice matters. Responsible travel is at the heart of what we do.

Stories From Our Happy Explorers

Fun activity for a snowy day in Tromso

Fun and great activity for a snowy day in Tromso. Our guide Evgen asked the group what level of difficulty we all wanted and he catered to our needs.
For some it was the first time on snowshoes and everything went just amazing. Demanding hill with amazing views and great stories from Evgen

Giselle B

Snowshoeing from Tromso

Had a great hike with Anna. The weather was superb and landscape so beautiful. We hiked on the beautiful island of Kvaløya and went all the way to the Lavvu of Ersfjord. Stopped off at the Lavvu for sandwich and a warm drink. Me and my family had a great time. Highly recommend.

Amazing Arctic walk with Max!

We took a small group snowshoeing tour with Max. The views were beautiful. Max was incredibly knowledgeable and showed us all sorts of interesting natural phenomena. We stopped for a picnic with delicious sandwiches and hot drinks. The tea was especially tasty. All in all, a great experience. I would highly recommend if you want to do something outdoors free of the stress of chasing the lights.
