Welcome to Levi

NORTHERN SKIES AND UNTOUCHED LANDSCAPES IN THE FINNISH WILDERNESS.

Explore the Gem of Finnish Lapland

Tucked above the Arctic Circle, Levi is winter at its most steady: snow, open skies, and quiet forests. Our small-group tours take you right into the heart of this landscape, to see the sky, the land, and the life it sustains.

Winter nature at its best.

Levi shows winter in its clearest form. Snow covers forests and hills, and frozen lakes stretch across the landscape. The air is cold and still, and reindeer tracks occasionally mark the trails. During the short daylight hours, the landscape changes subtly, with soft light reflecting off the snow. At night, clear skies reveal countless stars, and, if you’re lucky, aurora lights up the horizon. This is a place made for exploration: walking through quiet forests, noticing wildlife, and experiencing winter life above the Arctic Circle.

The Northern Lights in Levi

Levi sits directly under the auroral oval, one of the areas in the world where the Northern Lights appear most frequently. Long polar nights, low light pollution, and clear skies create ideal conditions to see the aurora. The lights can appear as soft green waves, sometimes with hints of purple or pink, moving silently across the sky. Their timing is unpredictable — one night may bring nothing, and the next a spectacular display — which makes every sighting unique. Small-group tours in Levi are designed to take you to the quietest, darkest spots, giving you the best chance to experience this natural phenomenon in a safe and comfortable way.

Did you know?

The Northern Lights are caused by charged particles from the sun colliding with Earth’s atmosphere, producing light in the sky. In Levi, this happens on roughly 111 nights each year.

Wandering Owl in Levi

After more than 11 years of guiding in Tromsø, we wanted to expand and share more of the Arctic’s beauty with our guests. We brought Wandering Owl to Levi for the same reasons we fell in love with Tromsø: wide, open landscapes, untouched nature, and skies that invite discovery. Here, our small-group tours let visitors experience the Arctic at a natural pace: walking forests, exploring fells, and witnessing the Northern Lights without crowds. Sustainability is at the core of our approach: we respect the environment, and make choices that leave the wilderness as we found it. Our goal is simple: to guide you through Levi’s winter landscapes safely, thoughtfully, and in a way that helps you connect with the Arctic world on your own terms.

Practical information

Levi is served by Kittilä Airport, which has regular flights from Helsinki and other major Finnish cities. From the airport, it’s a short 15–20 minute drive to the village center. Roads are well maintained, and transfers by taxi or shuttle are easy to arrange. Driving in winter is possible but requires experience with snowy and icy conditions.

The prime winter season runs from December to March, when snow covers the forests, fells, and frozen lakes. This is also the period with the most reliable conditions for winter activities and Northern Lights sightings. Daylight hours are limited during the polar night, but the long twilight and clear skies offer great opportunities for photography and outdoor exploration.

Layered clothing is essential — thermal base layers, warm mid-layers, and a waterproof outer layer. Sturdy winter boots, hats, gloves, and scarves are a must. Bring sunglasses for bright snowy days and a good camera to capture the landscapes and aurora. Extra warm accessories, like hand warmers, can make long outdoor activities more comfortable.

Levi offers a wide range of winter experiences: snowshoeing, cross-country skiing, road trips across snowy fells, Northern Lights tours, and reindeer encounters. Small-group tours allow you to explore safely while keeping the experience personal and immersive. The Arctic environment changes daily, so every day brings new sights and opportunities.

Temperatures typically stay well below freezing during winter, often ranging from –5°C to –20°C depending on the month. Wind and weather conditions can make it feel colder, so it’s important to dress appropriately. Despite the cold, the crisp air and snow-covered landscape make outdoor exploration comfortable with the right gear.
